QUEBRAR O GALHO

[To help solve a problem, usually as a stopgap measure, in a way which is temporary or uncertain.]

The expression quebrar o galho comes from Umbanda, a very popular religion in Brazil that blends Catholicism, Kardecist Spiritualism, and Afro-Brazilian religions. Intervention by spiritual beings in followers’ daily lives is a central belief, so participation in Umbanda ritual is important. The spiritual group called Exus is often called upon to help solve a problem, especially regarding romantic affairs. The expert in these matters is the Exu Quebra-Galho – Lit. Exu breaks branch, so called because he controls the forests and jungles.
